Screw eyes have been used to hang pictures for a very long time. In recent years many professional framers have switched over to modern flat profile picture hangers, which offer significant advantages over traditional screw eyes for hook & wire picture hanging.

Screw eye hangers must be installed carefully. Any elongation of the screw hole while turning them in will weaken their holding power. Screw eyes can deform and even break off at the neck if they are torqued down too vigorously. And the larger sizes tend to stick out unattractively on the back side of the frame.

Nevertheless, screw eye hangers remain in widespread use in the picture framing industry and have many applications outside of conventional picture hanging. They are quick and easy to install and are inexpensive.
